David Balfour: Being Memoirs of His Adventures At Home And Abroad, Stevenson, Robert Louis
1 Stevenson, Robert Louis David Balfour: Being Memoirs of His Adventures At Home And Abroad
New York Scribner's 1893 First American Edition Cloth Very Good No Jacket Issued
First American Edition--First Printing. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone with his beautiful gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown and his name signed in pencil with notations to the front endpaper. Goldstone and brother Adrian (Steinbeck's bibliographer) were great collectors of 19th and early 20th Century fiction. This copy is in dark tan cloth with dark brown and silver decorations and lettering to the front board. Spine is decorated in same with gold gilt lettering. A handsome copy slightly dust soiled at page ends and with a slightly darkened cloth spine with tiny specks of splashes at the heel. Original owners name in ink and dated 1894 on front free endpaper. Otherwise a tight and sturdy copy with a strong hinge and binding. A very collectable copy.

The Wrong Box, Stevenson, Robert Louis
2 Stevenson, Robert Louis The Wrong Box
New York Scribner's 1889 First American Printing Cloth Very Good No Jacket Issued
First American Printing. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone---with his penciled signature to the front pastedown and "1st edition" notations also in pencil. This being of the olive green variant cover with yellow paper label to upper front board--with black lettering. Gilt lettering to the spine. At least two variants are known with no one color taking first issue rights above the other. Co-authored by Stevenson's son-in-law Lloyd Osbourne. One of the original fictionalized detective stories--and a good one with a well thought out plot. A very good copy with some dustiness to the page edges, mild edgewear at the extremeties (mostly head and heel of the spine and corners). The gilt lettering to the spine is about half way faded. 244 pp and 4 pp adv. This copy has Scribner's original "patch" of newpaper clipping attached to the bottom center of the front board--which most buyers took to be a defect and tried to peel off. The story centers around an insurance scheme where the last surviving members are guaranteed a fortune--and two brothers are scheming to be the one who inherits the fortune.
