Ha Jin's 3rd novel, "A Free Life" tells the story of the price of freedom- and of a particular Chinese family's struggles to find happiness amid the sometimes oppressive life in the USA. After a brief initial period of transition, the "Wu" family soon finds themselves struggling with language issues and employment problems. "Nan Wu" who would have been a teacher in China, takes on a succession of menial jobs in America, even though he graduated from Brandeis University. Nan's wife "Pingping" and son "Taotao" struggle with cultural and language differences. Throughout it all, Nan fins familiarity and happiness in poetry and literature--and through the lean years--as his family slowly adjusts--they all come to realize that nothing truly worthwhile is ever easily earned. Ha Jin is a gifted writer who now teaches at Boston University and is also the author of several works of short fiction and poetry.
