At Play In The Fields Of The Lord (Signed 1st Printing), Matthiessen, Peter
4 Matthiessen, Peter At Play In The Fields Of The Lord (Signed 1st Printing)
New York Random House 1965 First Printing Hardcover Near Fine Near Fine
From an auction of modern first editions which contained an entire lot of Matthiessen titles--and with the auction tag laid into the book--a superb near fine first print copy in an unclipped and near fine dustjacket. This copy is signed by Matthiessen on the title page--without any inscriptions--sigature only. A solid tight and clean copy with no marks on plates--with only two light tape ghosts to the front cover and two to the back cover--resulting from the original acrylic dustjacket protector being taped to the book (see photos). In addition the front free endpaper has a very light and small area where there is glue residue left from the previous owner bookplate which has been expertly removed (see photo). Otherwise this copy of Matthiessen's fourth novel would be fine. The dustjacket is complete and unfaded--unclipped with only one very small 3/16" closed end tear to the top middle front panel--or would also be fine. This is the novel that put the author on the map to stardom both for fiction and non-fiction. President Kennedy had his non-fiction titles of "The Cloud Forest" and "Wildlife in American" in the White House library. Very scarce to find a signed copy in this exceptional condition.
