The World of Willa Cather, Bennett, Mildred R.
1 Bennett, Mildred R. The World of Willa Cather
New York Dodd, Mead 1951 First Cloth Fine Very Good
First Printing 1951. A superb fine copy in a near fine dustjacket. The early life of Pulitzer Prize winning author Willa Cather--in and around Red Cloud, Nebraska. A beautifully preserved copy with only a little bit of dustiness to the page edges. The dustjacket is price clipped with only a little bit of chipping and edgewear to the usual places--head and heel of the spine. A must have for the Cather collector--written by a woman who taught some of the children connected with the characters in the novels--as Cather took the real life characters she met and adapted them for her characters. Red cloth with brown and gilt lettering and decoration. A very collectable copy. Dustjacket not shown in digital image--but additional pics can be emailed--DJ is near fine.

New York Knopf 1949 First Edition Cloth Fine Very Good
First Printing 1949. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone--with his custom gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown. Dark top stain. 126 pp. Original $2.25 price on flap. Cather won the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the most influential writers of the early part of the 20th Century. Sapphira and the Slave Girl, Cather, Willa
6 Cather, Willa Sapphira and the Slave Girl
New York Knopf 1940 First Edition Cloth Fine Very Good
First Printing 1940. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone-with his custom gold plate lightly affixed on the front pastedown. A fine copy in a very good unclipped dustjacket. A little dustiness to the page edges and cloth spine--but was protected by the dustjacket over the years to practically eliminate the usual bleaching of the spine that is normal for this title. A clean and tight copy otherwise. The dustjacket is complete except for a minor amount of chipping to the head and heel of the spine. Medium age toning to the spine--the normal darkening at the spine and back DJ--but not much on the back cover. Otherwise the front jacket cover is nice. Goldstone and his brother (who was Steinbeck's bibliographer) were noted collectors--and recently their collection has come on the market, with some titles setting records at auction.

Sapphira and the Slave Girl, Cather, Willa
7 Cather, Willa Sapphira and the Slave Girl
New York Knopf 1940 First Edition Cloth Near Fine No Jacket
First Edition--Complimentary Advance Copy. Unlike the first trade edition--this complimentary edition says "First Edition" on the copyright page, and the wording to "A Note on The Design" at rear is also a little different. This is a nice and tight copy, clean interior with a bright green cloth front board and paper label. The spine has the usual tone darkening--instead of green it is now almost tan--which is quite common for this title. Without the darkening to the cloth spine this would be a fine copy. No dustjacket. This was Cather's last book. Taking place in Cather's birthplace state of Virginia just before the Civil War, the storyline revolves around a mulatto girl and her jealous mistress.

The Clansman, Dixon, Thomas Jr.
9 Dixon, Thomas Jr. The Clansman
New York Doubleday Page & Co. 1905 First Edition Cloth Very Good No Jacket
First Printing 1905. The author's presentation copy--signed on a special limitation page "With the compliments of Thomas Dixon Jr. Dixondale, Va". This is the true first printing with the gilt bordering surrounding the entire red cloth front board and gilt lettering with cross on the spine. The first trade edition had red cloth with white bordering. This copy also has the two advertisements for two of Dixon's other books following page 374 whereas the trade edition stops at page 374. Very good to near fine condition--slightly darkened on spine and a little spotting on the back board--although the front board is very bright and clean. A little wear to the head and heel of the spine (just beginning to fray). Gilt lettering on spine is still quite clear and bold eventhough the cloth is slightly darkened. Tissue guard covers the frontispiece.-- Otherwise tight & square. Beautiful M. B. Goldstone bookplate on front pastedown. A very scarce copy of a rare and controversial book--with the author's signature. "A historical romance of the Ku Klux Klan"--dedicated to the memory of the Grand Titan of the Invisible Empire".
