The Troubled Air, Shaw, Irwin
6 Shaw, Irwin The Troubled Air
New York Random House 1951 First Printing Cloth Very Good Very Good
Stated first printing on the copyright page. A very good copy in an very good dustjacket. A clean and unmarked interior. Four small tape ghosts and soiling to the cloth boards and endpapers- two on top and two on the bottom--although not stamped a library issue---there is some indication that it might be--and it is price accordingly . Previous owner may have had a clipping attached to the front cover. Light age toning to the fore edge--but overall a very good copy. The dustjacket has been price clipped and has very very minor chipping to the head of the spine--along with some rubbing and a thin crease to the front. Shaw's 2nd novel after "The Young Lions". "The Troubled Air" was a look into "McCarthyism" and it resulted in Shaw being blacklisted in Hollywood and accused of being a commnusist. Shaw left the USA and lived in Europe for the next 25 years but later said that the blacklisting only partially hurt his writing career.

7 Shaw, Irwin The Troubled Air
New York Random House 1951 First Printing Cloth Fine No Jacket
Presentation Edition. This is copy #726 of a limited edition. A fine copy in the original clear acetate wrap--a clean unmarked copy. Some very light age toning to the page edges--except the top edge where it is stained black--and not faded. The cloth at the head of the spine has loosened a bit---down a couple of inches--otherwise fine. From the Donald S. Olsen collection-a very nice collectable copy. The subject of this novel is McCarthyism and communism in the 50's--Shaw was blacklisted and eventually moved to Europe and spent the final 25 years of his life there where he died in Switzerland--although he maintained that being blacklisted did little to harm his career as a writer.

Tip On A Dead Jockey, Shaw, Irwin
8 Shaw, Irwin Tip On A Dead Jockey
New York Random House 1957 First American Edition Cloth Fine Fine
First Printing. From the collection of Donald S. Olson. A superb fine copy in a equally fine and unclipped dustjacket with the price of $3.95 on the front flap. Beautifully bound in red cloth with gilt lettering and decorations. Only the very lightest of uniform age toning--and one very small and slight blemish to the front free endpaper--where evidently a small price tag was removed. Otherwise a clean and tight copy with an equally impressive dustjacket with only a couple of small light wrinkles. Shaw was an impressive short story writer--this publication includes the title story, as well as "A Wicked Story", "Age of Reason", "Then We Were Three" and several others. Shaw is best known for his novel "The Young Lions". Protected in a plastic dustjacket cover and will be shipped Priority Mail at media mail prices.
