First Illustrated Edition 1903. From the recently auctioned collection of well known collector M. B. Goldstone-with his distinctive gold custom bookplate slightly attached to the front pastedown and his penciled signature and notations to the ffep. A near fine copy--larger than the 1902 edition and different in decoration and color. Off white cloth with fine gilt and red decorations and lettering to the front board and spine--a vine format with either roses or tulips. Top edge is gilt, fore edge and bottom edge is uncut. 4 blank front edge pages before the half title page, followed by another free front edge paper and the frontispiece--still nicely covered in tissue. Followed again with a photo of the author's colonial home, a list of illustrations and a list of characters. 469 pp followed by 5 blank pages. A beautiful copy from the author of "The Clansman"--which is tied into this story as well. Historical fiction of race and the Ku Klux Klan. Very collectable copy from a famed collector.
