Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (Signed Inscribed Limited Edition)

Price: $695.00

Quantity: 1 available

Fine 4 Vol. set of Sandburg's definitive work on Abraham Lincoln--covering the War Years. This is an unnumbered personally inscribed set to "Caroline Rieser Wallerstein-- 1939 Carl Sandburg" on the half-title page of Vol. 1. Carline Rieser Rau (Wallerstein) was a Chicago socialite, friend of Sandburg and voracious book collector whose second marriage was to David Wallerstein--who served on the Board of Directors of McDonalds, ABC, and Disney. Wallerstein was great friends with Walt Disney. Wallerstein was famous for two things--first of all-- he came up with the term "Supersize" for McDonalds--and for presenting Walt Disney (via Caroline Riesor who was enthralled with the book) a copy of "Mary Poppins"--which Disney subsequently turned into a movie by the same name. Superb unread condition in blue cloth and gilt lettering to the spines. Tight and clean copies. The slipcase is in very good plus condition with a bit of overall age toning and wear to the top cover --which is missing one fold down edge. The top cover has a silver paper label with title and description in black lettering. Four volumes with 414 halftones from photographs and 249 reproductions of cartoons, letters, and documents. A very collectible set once owned by one of Chicago's elite families. Wallerstein also was President of the Balaban and Katz movie theater chain headquartered in Chicago--where he first came to know Disney through their arrangement of showing Disney productions to the public. At Paramount, Wallerstein was an understudy of Adolf Zukor. Shipping cost is slightly higher because of the size and weight of the 4 Vol set.
