First Printing. A very handsome copy in very fine condition--in terracotta cloth with gilt lettering and decorations--in a custom brown cloth dustjacket and matching quarter brown morocco and cloth slipcase with gilt decorations to the spine. This copy is in remarkable unread condition--and perhaps never taken out of the slipcase in 120 years. Not a mark inside or out--tight square and clean. Original frontispiece and tissue guard as new. The slipcase is very good+ with some edgewear to the spine. 308 pp. A collection of tales that originally published in Harper's and Century Magazine and attributed to the author. From the well known M.B. Goldstone collection which was only recently auctioned with his custom gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown--along with his penciled signature to the ffep. A treasure of a book.
