First American Printing. From the collection of M. B. Goldstone---with his penciled signature to the front pastedown and "1st edition" notations also in pencil. This being of the olive green variant cover with yellow paper label to upper front board--with black lettering. Gilt lettering to the spine. At least two variants are known with no one color taking first issue rights above the other. Co-authored by Stevenson's son-in-law Lloyd Osbourne. One of the original fictionalized detective stories--and a good one with a well thought out plot. A very good copy with some dustiness to the page edges, mild edgewear at the extremeties (mostly head and heel of the spine and corners). The gilt lettering to the spine is about half way faded. 244 pp and 4 pp adv. This copy has Scribner's original "patch" of newpaper clipping attached to the bottom center of the front board--which most buyers took to be a defect and tried to peel off. The story centers around an insurance scheme where the last surviving members are guaranteed a fortune--and two brothers are scheming to be the one who inherits the fortune.
